Job Summary

The Vice President will play a critical role in our investment team, focusing on sourcing, evaluating and executing investment opportunities, and subsequently managing portfolio companies, and contributing to the overall growth strategy of the firm. The ideal candidate will demonstrate significant private equity experience, a strong analytical background and an ability to work collaboratively within a dynamic environment.

Job Details

Deal Sourcing and Relationship management

  • Proactively identify and source investment opportunities by leveraging professional network, industry contacts and market research
  • Build and maintain relationships with investment banks, financial advisers and other deal flow sources
  • Represent the firm at industry conferences, networking events and other relevant engagements

 

Investment Evaluation and Due Diligence

  • Lead the evaluation and due diligence process for potential investments including assessment of opportunities against investment criteria, financial analysis, market research and operational assessments
  • Lead the assessment of viability, risks and return expectations of investment opportunities
  • Lead the development of creative and appropriate financial structures for complex transactions (equity, debt, mezzanine)
  • Galvanize and collaborate with external advisors including legal, financial, tax commercial and ESG among others to rigorously analyze target investments 
  • Lead the negotiation of terms of investments in collaboration with advisers
  • Lead the development of post-acquisition value creation planning (100-day plan

 

Financial Modeling and Valuation

  • Lead the development and refinement of financial models including assumptions and thesis to determine optimal entry and exit valuations, project returns and cashflows for prospective investments
  • Develop scenarios and sensitivity analyses to understand the impact of various assumptions on investment outcomes
  • Oversee the preparation of detailed investment memorandums and lead presentations to the investment committee clearly and succinctly articulating thesis, value propositions and recommendations

 

Portfolio Management 

  • Collaborate with portfolio company managements to set strategy, develop budgets and detailed workplans to achieve set targets
  • Monitor portfolio company performance to track performance vs set goals at predetermined points in time, identify deviations in performance vs target, probe causes of deviation and recommend courses of action to ensure targets are met
  • Work closely with portfolio company teams to drive operational improvements and strategic growth initiatives
  • Participate and play an active role in board meetings, providing insights and guidance to drive value creation

 

Exits

  • Lead the development and execution of exit strategies for portfolio investments, ensuring optimal value realization for the firm and its investors
  • Lead scope of work and fee negotiations with prospective advisers
  • Collaborate with portfolio company managements and advisers to develop credible equity stories to sell to investors
  • Collaborate with adviser to narrow down a target investor universe
  • Galvanize advisers to develop detailed vendor due diligence reports ahead of exit launch 
  • Drive investor engagement process through to closure

 

Market Analyses and Reporting

  • Conduct market research to identify trends, competitive landscapes and growth opportunities within assigned sectors
  • Prepare regular market and portfolio performance reports for internal stakeholders
  • Stay updated on macroeconomic factors, regulatory changes and sector developments impacting the investment landscape

 

Team Leadership and Development   

  • Take responsibility for leading and representing the team on internal committees and engagements with senior management
  • Mentor and train junior team members in financial analysis, investment processes including financial instruments and industry dynamics
  • Drive the development of a high performing team culture focused on collaboration, innovation and excellence 
  • Foster a learning environment by sharing knowledge and best practices within the team

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field (Master's degree or MBA preferred).
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in private equity/investment banking  
  • Proven track record of successful transaction / investment management and deal execution.
  • Deep understanding of markets, economic trends, regions and industry sectors in Africa
  • Strong leadership, stakeholder management, written and verbal communication, negotiation and problem solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience leading teams, strong networks and developed relationships across multi-sectors 
  • Ability to think strategically, simplify complex problems, develop creative solutions with sound business and investment judgement 
  • Strong analytical and financial modelling and valuation skills.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and ethical standards.
